Yesterday a friend of mine called saying he was unable to start up tomcat4.1 because the java_home environment variable was missing. Though most of the apps now don’t really requires you to set the java_home variable explicitly, you might have to, at one point of a time and the correct way would to as below

set environment_variable=drive:\jdk folder\

eg: To set the variable from the command prompt

set JAVA_HOME=c:\jdk1.4\

notice the backward slash “\” which many a time is skipped and that was exactly why my friend was facing the problem, also the path is till the jdk folder and not upto ‘bin’

nb: the path should be pointing to jdk not jre

🙂 hope that helps
